Breeding for Temperament, Health & Type
Jo-Lyn
Keeshonden is dedicated
to the Keeshond standard and upholding the ethics and breeding practices of a
responsible breeder. Most importantly we are dedicated to breeding healthy happy
pets. I feel that is the most important career a dog can have in his life. Some
of these pets may have dual jobs as show dogs. In order to do this any dog being
considered for addition to the breeding program they must fit the following
guidelines.
Have an outstanding
temperament correct to the breed. A Kees is not a Kees without
a correct temperament. In my opinion this means a dog with a people loving, easy
going personality that lends itself to many situations. Neither dog nor people
aggressive. Never hyper or shy. Intelligent, eager to please and a joy to train.
Testing for above traits includes, AKC Canine Good Citizen testing. Attaining a
CD or higher obedience certification. Therapy dog
certification, or participation in other dog sports such as agility, Frisbee,
fly ball, or tracking.
Is healthy as proven
through stringent health tests. This includes; CERF testing for
eyes. OFA certification for hips, elbows, & stifles. All
dogs bred have been screened for Primary Hyperparathyroid Disease either by
genetic testing or by negative sire & dam matings. In
addition, research regarding health problems
in the pedigree, knowledge of dogs behind any potential breeding animal and
thoughts regarding the possibility of any breeding animal carrying a recessive
gene for a health problem.
Type that fits the
breed standard with no extreme structural faults. This will be shown by
exhibiting in AKC shows and attaining a Championship title or
being pointed along with being evaluated by other breeders and knowledgeable dog
people.
